There are no breath holds, forced deep breaths or strict counting patterns—just a few minutes to notice breathing while sitting comfortably.

Find a supported seat

Choose a sturdy chair with both feet resting on the floor or a firm footrest. Let your back be supported if that feels better. Rest your hands on your thighs and loosen clothing that feels restrictive. Keep your eyes open or softly focused if you prefer.

Follow a simple five-minute structure

Minute 1: notice contact. Feel the chair beneath you and your feet on the floor. There is no need to create a special posture. Let your jaw and shoulders rest.

Minutes 2–3: notice an ordinary breath. Pay attention to whichever sensation is easiest to feel: air near the nose, movement of the chest or movement of the abdomen. Let inhalation and exhalation happen naturally. Breathe through the nose or mouth as comfortable.

Minute 4: return gently. When thoughts interrupt, notice that and return to the next ordinary breath. You do not need to empty your mind or achieve a particular feeling.

Minute 5: look outward. Notice sounds in the room and the surface under your feet. Move your hands and feet gently, then return to your next activity.

If focusing on breathing feels uncomfortable

Shift attention to something outside the body, such as a neutral object in the room or nearby sounds. You may stop at any point. If breath awareness increases anxiety, another quiet activity may suit you better. Avoid trying to fix discomfort by breathing faster or taking repeated large breaths.

Keep the purpose modest

This is a general attention exercise, not treatment for asthma, panic attacks or another medical condition. New or persistent breathlessness needs medical assessment. A short comfortable practice is enough; longer is not automatically better.

Further reading

NCCIH: Yoga effectiveness and safety

This short practice uses attention rather than breath control.
